  • Some Recipes!

These recipes have been thoroughly tested and they produce great results. To be transparent, I no longer use these recipes because I’ve created my own — but believe me when I say these are solid.

The following blog post is full of helpful links to the resources I used when I started.

  • A Fan!

Dig that old fan out of your closet and put it to work! Fans speed up the drying process so your icing retains that signature puff. Your icing will build a solid crust much faster with the use of a fan.

I figure I don’t need to provide a link to a fan for you ;).

  • Gel Food Coloring

When making royal icing, it’s essential to add only as much water as you HAVE to. That’s why cookiers use gel food coloring to color their icing and not water-based colors. I’ve had great luck with U.S. Cake Supply products and they have different quantities available. (I’ve tested this specific product).

  • Judee’s meringue powder (absolutely rips)

If you’ve ever bitten into a sugar cookie and hit rock hard icing, it was probably missing meringue powder. Decorated sugar cookies with royal icing that’s made with meringue powder should have a solid crust with a soft, buttery bite.

  • Sugar Scriber or Toothpick

This little tool helps you control your icing, creating smooth shapes and edges on your cookie. I think scrubbers work more effectively than toothpicks (because toothpicks are super absorbent and get gummed up quickly), but you can totally make a toothpick work in a pinch. If you want to work more efficiently, pick up a scriber.

  • Piping Bags

Just trust me, you’ll want these disposable piping bags. They’re the perfect size and easy to control. You can use them with or without a piping tip.

Find a cozy workspace

Decorating sugar cookies takes patience and it can get a little messy. Find a spot with plenty of space to work and organize your supplies. Here’s a peek at my workspace if you’re curious. ;)
